| Who Could it Be? |
|
He held his first public office as a land surveyor in Culpeper County, Virginia, at seventeen. In 1759, he married a rich, young, widow named Martha Custis. He farmed tobacco and served in the Virginia legislature. When he was made commander-in-chief of the army, his home in Virginia was key, as it was believed a Virginian would bring the southern colonies into the battle against Great Britain. After the war, he was a national hero and could have been a king, but was instead elected president. Two years after vacating the presidency, he died and was called, by his successor, “the most beloved person this country has ever produced.” The cherry tree story was invented years after his death.
